1. Lindberg's EXPO tours in Europe
Magnus Lindberg´s orchestral work EXPO will be touring Europe in January and February 2010. EXPO´s tour will be initiated with the Finnish premiere of the work by FRSO at Finlandia Hall, Helsinki on January 13. The other performances of EXPO are included in New York Philharmonic´s European concert series. During the tour Lindberg´s work will be performed in Madrid on January 23, Frankfurt am Main January 27, Köln January 29, Paris February 1 and the tour will be concluded with the UK premiere in London on February 3.
Magnus Lindberg was also recently awarded with the Teosto Prize, the largest music prize in Finland. The prize sum of 40 000 euro was divided between the two winners, Lindberg and the Finnish popular music group PMMP.
2. Maria Kallionpää's works performed in Austria
Two new works by a member of the younger Finnish composer generation, Maria Kallionpää will be premiered in Austria in December and January. The first premiere will be heard on December 20 in Salzburg when a renowned Austrian contemporary music ensemble ÖENM (Österreicher Ensemble fur Neue Musik) performs Kallionpää´s wind quintet Circular thoughts. The other premiere is on January 24 when Kallionpää´s new work for piano and live-electronics titled Hommage a Schumann will be performed in a concert held in Musikverein, Wien.
3. HPO Premieres Eero Hämeenniemi's NEVER STOP! in January
Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra together with Struthi Laya percussion group premiere Eero Hämeenniemi´s new work for percussion and orchestra NEVER STOP! on January 20 at Finlandia Hall, Helsinki. Hämeenniemi´s new work continues his fascination with Indian music; the percussion group of the work includes, besides the more traditional instruments, an Indian laya percussion group that plays throughout the five-part piece.
NEVER STOP! is commissioned by the HPO and the world premiere will be conducted by John Storgårds.
4. Avanti! performs Finnish contemporary music from the 'Artists' Kalevala' -project
The chamber music ensemble Avanti! performs contemporary music inspired by the Finnish national epic Kalevalain February. The ten works that will be heard at the concert on February 26 were originally composed for the 'Artists´ Kalevala' -project organized by the Finnish Kalevala society. The works were premiered on Kalevala-day 2009 (February 28) for a guest audience in the Finnish National Gallery Ateneum, Helsinki.
Avanti! concert on February 26 at the Helsinki University´s Festival Hall will be the first chance for the large audience to hear these contemporary Kalevala-inspired compositions. The composers participants of the Artists´ Kalevala -project were Lotta Wennäkoski, Riikka Talvitie, Kimmo Hakola, Jukka Tiensuu, Herman Rechberger, Olli Kortekangas, Pekka Jalkanen, Einojuhani Rautavaara, Aulis Sallinen and Jovanka Trbojevic.
The Artists´ Kalevala project celebrates the Kalevala´s (1849) 160th jubilee year.
SHORT CUTS
-Composer Jaakko Kuusisto's music for Timo Koivusalo's new film 'Täällä Pohjantähden alla' ('Under the North Star') was released on a CD on December 9th, 2009. The music is performed by Lahti Sinfonia, one of the most internationally renowned Finnish orchestras, with the composer himself as conductor. The CD is released by Tactus ltd.
-On 16 December Birmingham Symphony Orchestra performs the UK premiere of Jukka Tiensuu´s orchestral work False Memories I-III.
