Topical in Finnish Film - February 2010

This is the February 2010 edition of the Topical in Finnish Film newsletter of the Finnish Film Foundation, published in the beginning of each month. The aim of this newsletter is to present a short summary of current national news, such as the next premieres and local audience figures, as well as to give you some advance information of internationally important events and dates coming up during the next few weeks.

Local films sold 226 781 tickets in January

The local hit of early 2010 has been Backwood Philosopher (Havukka-ahon ajattelija) by Kari Väänänen with a total of 110 777 admissions so far. During 2009, local films sold a total of ca. 1 Million tickets.

Premiering in February: Ricky Rapper and the Bicycle Thief and Pudana Last of the Line

The first local premiere in February is the family film Ricky Rapper and the Bicycle Thief (Risto Räppääjä ja polkupyörävaras) by Mari Rantasila (Feb 12). After having had its world premiere at the Berlinale Generation competition, Pudana Last of the Line (Sukunsa viimeinen) by Anastasia Lapsui and Markku Lehmuskallio opens on Finnish screens at February 26.

Forbidden Fruit won the first international award of 2010 in Pune, India

The drama feature Forbidden Fruit (Kielletty hedelmä) by Dome Karukoski was the first Finnish film to win an international award in 2010 - Special Mention of the Jury at Pune International Film Festival in India (January 7 - 14, 2010).

2009: Festivals and awards in figures

During the year 2009, Finnish films promoted by the Finnish Film Foundation were selected altogether 689 times for the programme of an international film festival or other happening and won 60 international awards.
