1. Carinthian Summer focuses on Finland
The Austrian festival Carinthian Summer (Carinthischer Sommer, 8 July - 28 August) will have a special focus on Finland in summer 2010. The highlight of the festival will be a church opera by Jyrki Linjama, titled Die Geburt des Täufers, which will have its premiere on the festival's opening night, 8 July, in Ossiach.


2. A recording of Aho's Rituals awarded, Emma Awards to be decided today
The music journalists and producers of Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE have chosen Kalevi Aho's Rituals (BIS-CD-1686) as the classical music recording of the year 2009. The winning recording includes three recent works by Kalevi Aho, performed by The Chamber Orchestra of Lapland, John Storgårds, Monica Groop, Anna Kreetta Gribajcevic and Herman Rechberger.

Another yearly awarding of Finnish classical music recordings will take place on 4 February, as the recipients of Emma Awards will be announced in Helsinki. Emmas are be awarded by IFPI Finland for the year's best Finnish recordings in several categories. Five classical recordings compete for the prize of the best classical recording of the year 2009.


3. Hakola's new work at Turku Cello Competition
The young cellists in Finland will be competing in national Turku Cello Competition from 20 to 26 February 2010. The competition has a tradition of commissioning works from Finnish composers, and this year the new work has been written by Kimmo Hakola. Hakola's Appassionato Op. 76 for cello and piano will receive its premiere during the second round of the competition.

The Turku Cello Competition continues the series of national contests for young Finnish musicians that started already in the first day of 2010. Lappeenranta singing contest (1-6 Jan) was won by soprano Marjukka Tepponen (b. 1984) and baritone Waltteri Torikka (b. 1987). In Kuopio Violin Competition (2-10 Jan) the first prize was taken by 24-year old Linda Bärlund, currently positioned as a violinist in a Swiss orchestra, L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. The second prize was given to Tuuli Talvitie, who is an orchestral player as well at the Finnish National Opera orchestra.


4. Tampere Biennale is here again - programme announced on 9 February
Tampere Biennale, the biennial contemporary music event in Tampere, Finland, will take place again next April. From 14 to 18 April the festival will introduce the newest works and phenomena in Finnish music. In addition to contemporary classical concerts the festival will also spread out to the fields of contemporary dance, visual arts, electronic music and music for children. This year's programme will be announced on 9 February.

Fimic will arrange a showcase event titled "Tune In" for international professionals in connection with Tampere Biennale. The 12 invited guests come from the Nordic countries, Europe, USA and Japan. Fimic´s main partners in the project are Tampere Biennale, Sibelius Academy, Society of Finnish Composers and Ministry for Foreign Affairs.


4. Fimic expands to cover the whole Finnish music field
The Finnish Music Information Centre Fimic has started functioning as an independent organization in the beginning of 2010, after being part of Finnish Composers´ Copyright Society Teosto since 1995. Along with the new arrangements Fimic will expand its functions to cover the Finnish music field wider than before.

From the beginning of 2010 on Fimic operates in the subordination of the Finnish Music Information Centre Fimic Association. The members of the new Fimic Association include Finnish Composers´ Copyright Society Teosto, Finnish Composers' Society, Finnish Society of Popular Music Composers and Authors ELVIS ry., Finnish Music Publishers Association, Finnish Musicians' Union and IFPI Finland.


NEW RECORDINGS
- Finnish record label Ondine continues its Uuno Klami recording series with a new cd released in early 2010. The new release (ODE 1143-2) includes, for example, the first commercial recording of Klami's orchestral fantasy Northern Lights, composed in 1946. The works are performed by Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and its chief conductor John Storgårds. The soloist in the Cheremissian Fantasy for violoncello and orchestra is the young Finnish cellist Samuli Peltonen, a member of the HPO himself as well as a winner of international cello competitions.
- Ondine also released a choral recording with YL Male Voice Choir in early 2010. Talescapes (ODE 1155-2) includes, for example, works by Perttu Haapanen, Mikko Heiniö, Tapio Tuomela and Riikka Talvitie. The recorded works have been commissioned by the choir.

CONCERTS AND PREMIERES
- Jan Mikael Vainio's work for Beatboxer and Strings, Fujiko's Fairy Tale, will be premiered in Mikkeli, Finland, on 18 Feb
- Kaija Saariaho's Emilie will be premiered on 1 Mar in Lyon, France. The performances will continue until 13 Mar.
- A new work by Jukka Tiensuu will be premiered at Lincoln Center, New York, on 16 Mar
- Works by Olli Kortekangas will be part of the concert series "Leading European Composers 2009-2010" by The Philllips Collection. The concert will take place on 18 Mar in Washington DC, United States
- The Dutch ensemble Insomnio will play works by Antti Auvinen, Jukka Tiensuu and Veli-Matti Puumala in February, March and April. The concerts take place in the Netherlands (27-28 Feb, 28 Mar, 2-3 Apr) and Cologne, Germany (Forum Neuer Musik, 9 Apr)
- Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra will premiere Ville Matvejeff's Ad Astra on 9 April in Helsinki
