Finnish documentaries take over North America

Finnish documentary films are strongly presented at several important film festivals of North America in April - May 2010.

Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in Durham, North Carolina (April 8 - 11, 2010) has invited to the New Docs series the short documentary Hanasaari A by Hannes Vartiainen and Pekka Veikkolainen as well as the feature-length documentary Ito - A Diary of an Urban Priest (Seitti - kilvoittelijan päiväkirja) by Pirjo Honkasalo. The New Docs series consists of 51 films, selected from among 1200 submissions.

The renowned Tribeca Film Festival in New York (April 22 - May 2, 2010) has invited to its World Documentary Competition the feature-length documentary Freetime Machos by Mika Ronkainen. The 12 non-fiction films in this section compete for Best Documentary Film and Best New Documentary Filmmaker.

North America´s largest documentary festival, Hot Docs in Toronto (April 29 - May 9, 2010) has invited altogether four Finnish titles. Out of the 32 titles in the International Spectrum competitive program, two are Finnish: Steam of Life (Miesten vuoro) by Joonas Berghäll & Mika Hotakainen and Ito - A Diary of an Urban Priest (Seitti - kilvoittelijan päiväkirja) by Pirjo Honkasalo. Also out of the 26 titles in the World Showcase, two are Finnish: Freetime Machos by Mika Ronkainen and Portrait of a Man (Miehen kuva) by Visa Koiso-Kanttila.

Freetime Machos is produced by Mika Ronkainen & Kimmo Paananen / Klaffi Productions. It had its world premiere last November at the renowned IDFA in Amsterdam and domestic theatrical premiere on March 12, distributed by Pirkanmaan elokuvakeskus.

Hanasaari A is produced by Hannes Vartiainen & Pekka Veikkolainen´s own production company Pohjankonna. It has been screened during the past year or so at about 30 international film festivals around the world and awarded earlier at the Hong Kong International Film Festival and twice in Germany.

Ito - A Diary of an Urban Priest is produced by Kristiina Pervilä / Millennium Film. It has earlier been screened at festivals in Reykjavik, Leipzig and Istanbul.
