1. Fimic brings music professionals to Tampere Biennale
Fimic will bring 12 contemporary music professionals from around the world to Finland on 15 - 18 April. The international guests will take part in the first ever export event "Tune In - Showcase for Finnish Contemporary Music", arranged in association with Tampere Biennale contemporary music festival. The guests, coming from Nordic countries, Central Europe, United States and Japan, will attend concerts and meet Finnish music professionals, composers and musicians.
Tune In continues the series of showcase events arranged by Fimic in other genres of music. Arctic Paradise Live focused on the contemporary folk and world music from 2007 to 2009, and Finnish Jazz Event introduced Finnish jazz from 2004 to 2006. Tune In will be continued also in the next two years in association with other Finnish contemporary music festivals.
2. Tampere Biennale is here again
Tampere Biennale, the biennial contemporary music event in Tampere, Finland, will present this year new Finnish music in altogether 17 concerts in 5 days, 14 to 18 April. The wide array of works spans from contemporary classical concerts to dance and visual arts, with electronic music clubs in the evening and children's day in the weekend. The programme includes 10 first performances and dozens of other new works, performed by top class Finnish ensembles and musicians.
3. Finnish works at ISCM World New Music Days in Sydney
ISCM World New Music Days in Sydney, Australia (30 Apr - 9 May) will feature works from five Finnish composers. The programme includes piano works by Lauri Kilpiö and Einojuhani Rautavaara, as well as Rautavaara's first Cello Sonata, Tomi Räisänen's L'Homme Arme and Seppo Pohjola's choral work The Wicked Witch of the North. In addition, Sid Hille's big band work Felsenfest will be played by Sydney Conservatory Big Band in their concert.
4. Aulis Sallinen's 75 years celebrated in Naantali in June
Aulis Sallinen's 75th birthday has been celebrated by several orchestras and events both in Finland and abroad, and the celebration still continues. In the summer, Sallinen will be one of the theme composers of the Naantali Music Festival, arranged in Finland from 8 to 20 June. A new work, Piano Trio Op. 96, will be premiered on 11 June by pianist Ralf Gothóni, violinist Elina Vähälä and cellist Arto Noras. Altogether the festival programme will feature eight of Sallinen's works.
SHORT CUTS
- Composer Tapio Tuomela has been selected as the new chairman of the Society of Finnish Composers. Tuomela will thus follow Mikko Heiniö in the position that he has held for several years.
- Finnish conductor Sasha Mäkilä has been appointed as Assistant Conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra beginning of September 2010. Mäkilä has studied conducting at St. Petersburg State Conservatory in Russia, at Sibelius Academy in Finland, and at the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen in USA. Currently he works for the Orchestre National de France, as Kurt Masur's assistant conductor.
NEW RECORDINGS
Alba Records has released a new cd of Tapio Tuomela's choral works (ABCD 300). The recording Spells (Loitsut) features six works by Tuomela, for example Four Songs from Antti Puuhaara (2008) and Lullabies and Spells (2000), all sung by Helsinki Chamber Choir. The choir is conducted by Eric-Olof Söderström, Nils Schweckendiek and Hannu Norjanen.
Record company Ondine has released a recording of Magnus Lindberg's Teosto Prize winning work Graffiti in March (ODE 1157-2). The recording also includes Lindberg's orchestral work Seht die Sonne. The works are performed by Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Helsinki Chamber Choir and conductor Sakari Oramo.
Sibelius Academy has launched a new label Sibarecords, releasing music by the university's own staff and students. The first releases of the series include a cd of electronic music by Kalev Tiits, titled Stone Dance (SACD-1004), and a Haydn recording by The Finnish Baryton Trio (Markus Kuikka, baryton, Jussi Sarantola, viola, Jussi Seppänen, cello, SACD-1001).

CONCERTS AND PREMIERES
- The German Dufay Ensemble will present works by Ari Romppanen, Riikka Talvitie, Pasi Lyytikäinen, Markku Klami and Maija Hynninen in a concert "Neue Musik aus Finnland" in Germany on 17 and 18 April 2010.
- Pertti Jalava will celebrate his 50th birthday with a record release concert on 28 April, and three chamber music concerts on 4-6 May in Turku, Paimio and Helsinki, Finland.
- Paola Livorsi's Solo il silenzio vive (2009) will be played in Turin, Italy, on 8 May.
- Tomi Räisänen's works will be heard in Germany (Greifswald, 12 May) and USA (Chicago, 15 and 19 May) in May
- Kimmo Hakola's Symphony No. 1 will get its premiere on 19 May in Helsinki, Finland, by Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra.
- Sebastian Fagerlund's new work Exhibit will be premiered in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 6 June.
