_June News: Book prizes and other surprises!

To mark the occasion of the publication of Matti Rönkä's debut crime novel Grensgeval (Tappajan näköinen mies, 2002) by the publishing house Q, we are giving out copies of the book to two of our lucky readers. Simply send an email with the subject "Matti" to info@finncult.be before June 15 and Lady Luck will take care of the rest. The novel has won several prices in Finland and in Germany. The author himself will visit Amsterdam and Ghent this week.



_(Nordic) crime rates on the rise

Part of the Dutch Maand van het spannende boek event, an evening dedicated to Nordic crime authors The Power of Plots is held in Amsterdam's Melkweg on June 1. Participants include such succesful names as Roslund&Hellström and Jens Lapidus from Sweden, Matti Rönkä from Finland, and Jo Nesbø from Norway who discuss their novels.

In Vooruit in Ghent the authors will take part in Nordic Crime Night event during which the authors will be interviewed about their work and its success. Present will be the Finn Matti Rönkä, Roslund&Hellström from Sweden, Unni Lindell from Norway and Danish Leif Davidsen. Audience will have a chance to win a package that includes all the authors' latest book translations! Both events are held in English. _Read more here...


_The never-ending light of North

Anne-Mareike Hess studies the conception of light and time and their relation to human life in her choreography piece Never-ending up north. This latest creation of Hess has been inspired by the midnight sun and the feeling of time standing still that she experienced during her journey to Lofoten. These experiences she has translated into movement and dance. Never-ending up north premiers on June 3 in Théâtre National du Luxembourg and it will be performed by three dancers and two musicians: Finnish Sandra Lolax being one of the dancers and Markus Pesonen, also a Finn, being one of the musicians. _More information here...





_Unique moments in Momentum

Performance art is an interesting way to express oneself. Every art piece is one of a kind and exists only for the while it is performed. The first weekend of June the Creative Brewery in addition to other Brussels locatitons become a stage for international performance artists. Already for the fifth time Momentum festival hosts artists from all over the world, including Finland. In her work Finnish artist and mathematician Irma Optimist deals with modern society´s conception of gender and its counterpart, nature. Seize the moment in Momentum festival! _See more here...


_A timeless tribute to folk

Clear your schedule to be exposed to some folk music! The first weekend of July the stages in Gooik will be filled with folk musicians from all over the world. The trio Henriksson-Kleemola-Prauda will present their Finnish vision of folk in this Belgian event. Gooikoorts festival is an ode to modern as well as more traditional folk music. A joyful blend of different notes will lure people to experience the relaxed atmosphere of the festival. Everyone is welcome, old and young, performers and listeners. _Listen and read more...





_Julidans celebrates its 20 years

During the two first weeks of July, Amsterdam transforms into the European capital of dance. For the 20th time dancers, choreographers and dance enthusiasts can exchange ideas and visions in the heart of Amsterdam. The programme of Julidans presents a variation of newcomers, renowned dancers, choreographers, experimental work and pieces that can be considered as classics. One of the latter is a choreography by Finnish Jyrki Karttunen, Digital Duende, that can be seen in the beautiful Vondelpark's open air theatre on July 2. _More information here...


_Experience the legendary Leif Segerstam

Finnish orchestra conducting at its best can only mean one thing: Leif Segerstam. With Finnish tenor Jorma Silvasti added to this, the outcome can be nothing but excellent. Both of the Finns appear at the core of Benjamin Britten´s opera Peter Grimes that premieres on June 13 in the Flemish Opera in Antwerp and July 3 in Ghent. Peter Grimes tells a tragic life story of a solitary fisherman who is rejected by his own community. _Tickets and more information...

_Tove Jansson continues to charm

Moomins, the charming cartoon characters of Finnish artist Tove Jansson have come to spend their summer in the Belgian Comic Strip Center in Brussels. This critically acclaimed exhibition is a unique opportunity to get acquainted with Tove Jansson and her work as the exhibition presents works that have never before been seen in public. The Moomins stay in Brussels until the end of August. Get fascinated by the colourful images and dive deep into the dream world of Tove Jansson! _See more here...


_Finnish style at Design September

This autumn the Brussels Design September will feature the absolute top of Finnish design. With his clear lines and brilliant sense of style, Harri Koskinen is become one of world's most leading designers. He has curated the exhibition Into the Woods - a history of Iittala that will be seen in diito gallery. Koskinen will also give a lecture in Flagey. Other Design September events include the Finnish designer duo Company who will present their project Made in Belgium during a special frietkot tour and Artek furniture, that will also be seen in diito gallery. _Find out more....
