376,459 euros in spring 2010 translation grants

This spring the FILI advisory board and Advisory Board of the Delegation for the Promotion of Literature in Swedish approved a total of 376,459 euros in translation, printing and travel grants for 236 different projects. 155,713 euros was awarded to applicants for grants to translate from Finnish or Swedish into other languages and 113,520 euros was awarded for translations into Finnish.

FILI has five translation grant programs and three printing grant programs which together award approx. 500,000 euros each year. Grants are also available for Finnish publishers of translations into Finnish and Swedish. In addition, FILI provides sample translation grants and travel grants for translators. The autumn 2010 grant application period ends November 1, 2010.

Continuing education for translators

FILI is offering more of its popular translator training seminars in summer 2010. A seminar for Estonian-Finnish-Estonian translators will be held June 14-19, partly in preparation for the Estonian theme at the Helsinki Book Fair in 2011. Seminar participants will be ten translators from Estonia, ten from Finland, and two from Latvia. The training will begin in Tallinn and continue in Helsinki, and will include numerous translation workshops. Instructors will include translators Maimu Berg, Piret Saluri, Hannu Oittinen, Jouko Vanhanen, Juhani Salokannel and Jan Kaus. The seminar is organised in collaboration with ELIC (Estonian Literature Information Centre) and LAF (Literature Across Frontiers).

A traditional beginner translators´ seminarwill be held August 16-28, led by translator and author Stefan Moster. Featured authors will be prose writers Riitta Jalonen and Olli Jalonen. Translators from 14 different countries will participate in the seminar, where they´ll have opportunities to learn about the trends and texts of contemporary Finnish literature and discuss essential issues in translation.

A FILI seminar for beginner Finnish-to-Russian translators (April 25-30) elicited a record 95 applicants, of which 15 were admitted to the tutelage of translator Anna Sidorova. The multifaceted seminar included translation workshops on Leena Parkkinen´s novel Sinun jälkeesi, Max (‘After you, Max´, Teos, 2009) and visits to Finnish publishers. Editors´ week

FILI is organising a publishers´ and editors´ visit to Helsinki in August (23-27). Publishers and editors from numerous fields of literary work and many different countries, including Germany, France and England, will travel to Finland to learn more about the wide world of Finnish literature and its many practitioners. Kaksinkertainen/Dubbelt/Doppelt multimedia piece can now be seen on the FILI website

The Kaksinkertainen/Dubbelt/Doppelt author tour April 17-30 made its way across German-speaking Europe — in spite of the volcanic eruption in Iceland. Monika Fagerholm, Olli Jalonen, Robert Åsbacka and others wound their way through Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Leipzig, Munich, and Stuttgart. Timo Parvela, whose Ella books have been very popular in Germany, met with hundreds of young readers in events arranged by literature houses in Rostock, Frankfurt, and Leipzig. Katja Tukiainen and Petteri Tikkanen made their appearance at the Stuttgart Literature House by means of Skype video conferencing. A multi-media presentation on Finnish literature featuring Tukiainen and Tikkanen´s illustrations and author Roman Schatz´s writing which was used to open all of the author appearances at literature houses can now be seen on the FILI website.

Suomenlinna Studios welcomes literary laborers

The Palmstierna Studio, which opened at the beginning of 2009, is situated in a 18th-century brick building in the unique nautical surroundings of Suomenlinna (Sveaborg). Suomenlinna´s historic island fortresses are a popular attraction only 15 minutes by boat from central Helsinki. Those working in the arts, humanities and social sciences are eligible to make use of four apartments for one or two persons each.
